Household Recycling Centres

Household Recycling Centres

Thalia Waste Management operates nine Household Recycling Centres across Cambridgeshire as part of its partnership with Cambridgeshire County Council, as well as three waste transfer stations.

The sites allow residents to dispose of their household waste, free of charge, and we then make sure as much as possible is recycled.

The addresses for each of the centres are below and you can also find helpful information – including a location map, opening hours and handy tips on how to use the sites – on Cambridgeshire County Council’s website.

Our nine centres accept residents' garden waste, timber, glass, metals, paper, cardboard, textiles, batteries and waste electrical equipment for recycling. Business waste is not accepted at the centres.

If you’re visiting a centre, please make sure children and animals stay in your vehicle at all times – there are a lot of moving cars and equipment, and we don’t want anyone to get hurt.

Top tips on using the recycling centres:

  • Separate your waste before you go – this saves time and helps us recycle more of your rubbish
  • Recycling centres are busy at weekends and bank holidays. If you can, visit on weekdays when they are less busy
  • If bringing in waste via a van or trailer, please contact the recycling centre in advance.

Waste Transfer Stations: As well as the Household Recycling Centres, Thalia Waste Management operates three transfer stations for councils and business to directly drop off their waste. Transfer stations at Waterbeach Waste Management Park and Alconbury are open to both local councils and businesses, while the third at March is for local authorities only.

The public can also use all three sites for picking up their free soil conditioner, as well as dropping off asbestos. All three also provide an aggregates collection area for the general public and businesses, where you can purchase or arrange delivery of different materials including limestone, sands, gravels and type one road stone.

Waterbeach Transfer Station: A purpose-built unit allows councils and traders to drop off their waste in a safe way – with all vehicles staying on dedicated, surfaced routes.

We also offer an extensive construction and demolition drop off, sorting and recycling service at Waterbeach. Builders and other tradesmen can dispose of their non-hazardous general and construction and demolition waste.

Concrete, brick and tile rubble and glass is recycled as secondary aggregates, while timber is recycled into chipboard, animal bedding or as a fuel in energy plants. Clean card is recycled as new cardboard, while soil is reused at the Waterbeach site for landfill restoration.

In addition to the construction and demolition area, properly bagged cement bonded asbestos can be deposited in a separate, dedicated collection skip (see below for process).

Waterbeach Waste Transfer Station, Ely Road, Waterbeach, Cambridge, CB25 9PG

Opening hours: Monday – Friday: 7am – 5pm, Saturday: 7am – 12noon, Sunday: Closed

Alconbury Transfer Station: The Alconbury transfer station provides Huntingdonshire District Council with a local tipping point for its waste collection trucks, bulky waste and street sweepings (prior to it being transferred to Waterbeach Waste Management Park). The site is also licensed to accept trade waste.

Aggregates: Customers can pick up a range of different materials including limestone, sands, gravels and type one road stone. We also offer a delivery service for local customers. Contact the site for more information about this service.

Asbestos: Residents can bring properly bagged cement bonded asbestos to the Alconbury site for deposit in a special collection skip (see below for process).

Alconbury Waste Transfer Station, Stangate Park, Alconbury Hill, Alconbury, Weston, Huntingdon, PE28 4JH, Telephone: 01487 831658
Opening hours: Monday - Friday: 7am - 5pm, Saturday: 7am - 12noon, Sunday: Closed

March Transfer Station: The transfer station at March takes waste and recycling collected by Fenland District Council residents' bin collections. It is then transferred on to Waterbeach Waste Management Park.

Asbestos: Residents can bring properly bagged cement bonded asbestos to the Alconbury site for deposit in a special collection skip (see below for process).

March Waste Transfer Station, Melbourne Avenue, March, PE15 0EN, Tel: 01354 652563

Opening hours: Monday – Friday: 7am - 5pm, Saturday: 7am - 12noon, Sunday: Closed

Asbestos: We provide a facility for household cement-bonded asbestos only at Waterbeach, March and Alconbury waste transfer stations.

If you wish to dispose of cement-bonded asbestos, you must first complete an online form on Cambridgeshire County Council's website.

Once you have done this and placed your asbestos in a special bag provided by the council, you must then call the transfer station you intend to visit to agree a delivery time and to provide your authorisation code:

Alconbury: 01487 831658
Waterbeach: 01223 861856
March: 01354 652563

The asbestos can then be taken to the transfer station, where a special skip is provided.

Please note: Thalia Waste Management people will not be able to help unload bagged asbestos from vehicles and asbestos not contained in the required bags supplied by Cambridgeshire County Council will be rejected.
