York & North Yorkshire

Our work in North Yorkshire

Thalia Waste Management works in partnership with City of York Council and North Yorkshire County Council.

Working together, we manage waste treatment at the Allerton Waste Recovery Park.

Allerton Waste Recovery Park is a state-of-the-art facility treating ‘black bag’ waste from households across the county.
The site became operational in March 2018 and employs 90 local people.
Through a unique combination of three technologies, it is reducing the amount of household waste from North Yorkshire being sent to landfill by at least 90%.

40k: a key number

This is done by:

  • Sorting ‘black bag’ waste using mechanical treatment technology to extract and recycle items
  • Processing around 40,000 tonnes of food and organic waste each year to generate renewable energy
  • Using the remaining non-recyclable waste to generate enough energy to power at least 40,000 homes.

The site also features a visitor information centre for use by schools and community groups in North Yorkshire.
