Milton Keynes Waste Recovery Park

Thalia Waste Management is working in partnership with Milton Keynes Council operating a state-of-the-art facility to treat ‘black sack’ waste, from households across the Milton Keynes borough.

Technology at our Milton Keynes park

At the park we bring together three comprise technologies to make the most of Milton Keynes’ black sack’ waste:

Mechanical Treatment (or MT), which sorts the waste

Anaerobic Digestion (or AD) which extracts food and biodegradable items to generate renewable energy

Advanced Thermal Treatment (or ATT) where the remaining non-recyclable and non-compostable material will be used as a fuel to generate renewable energy

Together, the technologies cut the amount of rubbish sent to landfill to around 3% and creates enough energy to power the equivalent of 11,000 homes.

By diverting waste away from landfill, we are able to use it as a resource to generate energy. Each year we handle 132,000 tonnes of waste – that’s enough to fill more than 860 Olympic sized swimming pools.
